Iloilo City has suspended face-to-face classes from pre-school to senior high school on April 1 and 2, 2024 due to the extreme heat.
Mayor Jerry Treñas issued the order on March 31, 2024. The order covers both public and private schools.
The order says the suspension of classes “follows the 41 degrees Celsius or “danger” level heat index forecast of Pagasa on the city from April 1-2, 2024.”
Treñas said schools also have the discretion to suspend or cancel classes in college and graduate school.
“Face-to-face classes from pre-school to senior high school, both in public and private schools within the territorial jurisdiction of Iloilo City is hereby suspended from April 1, 2024 to April 2, 2024, unless otherwise extended or lifted earlier. Face-to-face classes at the collegiate level, including graduate school, may be canceled or suspended at the discretion of their respective School Heads/Administrators,” the order reads.
The order states further that school heads must ensure health and safety of students and staff by adopting alternative learning delivery modes for face-to-face classes.
“Due to the high heat conditions caused by the summer season and El Niño, School Heads are enjoined to implement appropriate measures to ensure the health and safety of students and staff within school premises, which includes adoption of alternative learning delivery modes in view of the face-to-face classes,” the order reads.
“It is hereby reiterated that the Department of Education has directed elementary and secondary schools to shift to alternative delivery modes of learning, such as modular and online classes in case of suspension of face-to-face classes due to intense heat. Learners are advised to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, stay indoors especially during the hottest part of the day, wear lightweight, breathable clothing and avoid strenuous activities during peat heat hours,” it reads further.
