A barangay chairman and a barangay councilman (kagawad) were shot to death inside the Barangay Hall of Daja Diot, San Isidro town, Province of Leyte.
A village watchman (barangay tanod) was also shot but was rushed to the hospital, while another was wounded.
The officials were identified as Barangay Chairman Elizalde Tabon and Kagawad Paulo Al Mendero.
Rusty Salazar, the barangay tanod, was rushed to the hospital but expired there. A fourth victim is recuperating in the hospital, as of posting time.
The perpetrators went reportedly inside the barangay hall and fired at the victims in the evening of February 24, 2024 according to a press statement issued by the Leyte Police Provincial Office (LPPO), with Police Colonel Erwin Portillo at the helm.
According to the LPPO, the victims were having a meeting in the barangay hall when they were shot instantaneously by four unidentified men.
The men fled purportedly onboard two motorcycles, the direction of which was unknown.
San Isidro Municipal Police Station conducted a hot pursuit operation while the adjacent police stations conducted dragnet operations for possible identification and apprehension of the perpetrators.
“This incident is currently under investigation…our primary focus is the safety and security of the residents in San Isidro and other municipalities in the 3rd District of Leyte. We are working tirelessly to apprehend those responsible for these violent acts and put an end to this criminal activity. We are collaborating with other law enforcement agencies, conducting thorough investigations, and utilizing all available resources to ensure a swift resolution,” LPPO stated.
Police Colonel Portillo, LPPO director, called on residents to report any suspicious activities or information that can help in the investigation.
“We understand the concerns and fear that this incident has caused among our citizens. We urge everyone to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities or information that can aid in our investigations. Your cooperation and assistance are crucial in maintaining the safety and security of our community,” Portillo said.
The public, especially netizens, is also reminded to exercise restraint in sharing unverified information.
“Further, we would like to remind the public to refrain from drawing conclusions until all facts are established through a comprehensive investigation. Any speculation or spreading of unverified information may affect the ongoing investigation and hinder the pursuit of justice in this case.
