The City Government of Naga in Cebu Province is set to file charges for malversation of public funds against a liquidating officer of the City Treasurer’s Office who was earlier taken into police custody but was released later.

According to Police Lt. Col. William Homoc, chief of the City of Naga Police Station, the 44-year-old liquidating officer will be facing malversation charges.

The government employee was taken into police custody at around 6 p.m. on February 19, 2024 for an estimated P12 million allegedly missing from the city coffers.

Despite being entrusted to collect taxes and deposit the money in the bank, the liquidating officer failed allegedly to explain on the missing sum.

Homoc said the woman was released on the night of February 19, 2024.

The Commission on Audit bared of the missing P12 million after a review of pertinent documents.

State auditors found out that the latest transaction was done on February 13, 2024.

The Local Government Unit is bound to change reportedly its collection system following the incident.
