A forest fire spread up to three hectares across Camp John Hay in Baguio City at around 3 a.m. on February 11, 2024. This marks the fourth forest fire incident in the city this February.
Firefighters, forest rangers, and volunteers responded to contain the flames.
Some telecommunication lines were affected by the fire.
"Ngayon mas malaki ang lugar na nasunog, ‘yung pine needle makapal ang naimbak… kapag nasusunog ‘yun, matagal mamatay kaya iyon ang problema," SFO4 Chester Boy Presco, Chief Operations of Baguio City Fire Station, said.
Personnel from the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) in Baguio used water-carrying equipment to control the fire.
“Malakas ang hangin at usok kaya kailangan namin ng mask at kunting tubig para hindi ma-dehydrate," Oliver Coldeg, Enforcement Monitoring Section Staff of CENRO-Bagiuo, said.
By 10:30 a.m., authorities declared the fire under control.
As of this writing, the BFP has yet to determine the cause of the fire.
No one was injured and no building was affected.
The BFP reminded the public to avoid burning dried leaves in their yards.
“Kung hindi maiiwasan na magsunog, bantayan natin ang mga sinusunog hanggang sa tuluyang maapula at kung kaya, huwag tayong magsiga sa ating bakuran," Presco said.
