Tension was high in Sitio Balubad, Brgy Anunas, Angeles City when residents confronted - even resorting to throwing breakable objects - at a group of men who arrived to demolish their homes.

The situation resulted in injuries to several residents, members of the police force, and the demolition team.

According to one of the leaders from the Homeowners and Farmers Association, the situation persisted for two days.

The community was in fear and confusion as there was reportedly no prior agreement regarding the demolition.

"Medyo natakot po ‘yung mga tao dahil wala naman po sa usapan na mayroon silang gigibain na bahay. Ngayon, may deployment kanina [at] nagulat na din po ‘yung mga tao na napapalibutan na po ng SWAT at demolition team na naman…. sumiklab na naman po ‘yung takot," Maryjoy Paragas, Secretary of Homeowners and Farmers Association, said.

The police said they had to bring shields because the demolition team wanted to proceed and had to be protected.

"Talagang nagri-resist ‘yung mga residente ng Balubad kaya may shield [ang police] dahil gustong umabante ng mga demolition team,” PMaj. Vicky Tamayo, the Station Commander of the Angeles City Police Station 5, said.

What reportedly happened was that the residents threw items at the demolition team as the team was heading to a vacant lot.

He said they have exercised maximum tolerance since the start.

Approximately 500 tenants are facing eviction from the 73-hectare land in Sitio Balubad, Brgy Anunas, Angeles City, following the cancellation of the Certificate of Land Ownership Award given to the tenants.

The land was sold to a private developer.

The City Government of Angeles condemned the surprise demolition.

In a social media post from the Angeles City Information Office, Mayor Carmelo Lazatin, Jr. said the developer did not submit a required concrete development plan before the displacement of residents.

“Mayor Carmelo 'Pogi' Lazatin Jr. today declared that the city will now proceed with the city government's plan to expropriate the contested land for Anunas tenants,” he said.

The expropriation will reportedly proceed even with the demolition initiated by the developer, which allegedly violates the agreement between the company and the LGU.
