A phreatic eruption from the Mayon Volcano summit occurred at 4:40 p.m. on Sunday, February 4, 2024, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
The eruption lasted for about 169 seconds based on the seismic record, PHIVOLCS said.
“The event generated a booming sound, rockfall, pyroclastic density currents or PDC and a 1,200 meter-tall plume that drifted to the southwest,” it said in a Facebook post.
Mayon Volcano remains at Alert Level 2.
During Alert Level 2, PHIVOLCS advises the public to stay out of the six-kilometer Danger Zone.
In case of an ash fall event, people should cover their nose and mouth with a damp cloth or mask.
Pilots should avoid flying near the volcano's summit.
PHIVOLCS will monitor the volcano closely and communicate any changes and updates immediately to the public.
