A pickup truck plowed through a police checkpoint and hit two policemen, dragging one officer a hundred meters away on the Aguinaldo Highway in Barangay Tubuan-2, Silang, Cavite.
The 27-year-old cop who got dragged died while his comrade, a 29-year-old policeman, is recovering in the hospital.
"Well lighted naman ‘yung area… napag-alaman po natin [na] ito pong driver ay positive po sa alcohol breath [test]. Ibig sabihin, nakainom po ‘yung driver. Galing po sila ng Tagaytay… medyo siguro nagkainuman daw po doon sa isang kaibigan tapos pauwi na po sila around 2:40 a.m. nu’ng mangyari ang insidente po,” PCPT. Noel Obrador, spokesperson for the Silang Police Station, said.
The pickup truck, driven by a 22-year-old resident of Silang, Cavite, was reportedly traveling at high speed and failed to stop at the checkpoint despite early warning devices on the road.
The suspect was arrested and is now facing charges, including reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, multiple physical injuries, damage to property, and violation of Republic Act 10586, which penalizes driving under the influence of alcohol.
The Land Transportation Office (LTO) may also revoke his driver's license.
Obrador reiterated reminders to residents and motorists:
"Sa mga driver po natin, mga motorista, unang-una po, huwag po tayong magmamaneho ng nakainom at marami pong pwedeng mapinsala o madamay. Dahil po sa isang kaapabayaan, malungkot isipin po na mayroon tayong tropa na binawian ng buhay,” he said.
