At least 89 baby Olive Ridley turtles were released into the sea in Barangay Catburawan, Ligao City in Albay.
The discovery of the hatchlings was reported by residents, prompting the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to take immediate action.
Olive Ridley turtles are considered endangered species, and the successful hatching of these turtles is a positive sign for their population.
"Marami pong reported hatchling ibig sabihin maganda po yung population nila," Lawrence Dote, an Ecosystem Management Specialist from DENR Cenro Guinobatan, said.
The local government, in collaboration with DENR, has been conducting Information Education Drives actively to raise awareness among residents about the importance of protecting marine species.
"We have made them aware, so aware na sila, dati kinukuha nila yan, pinaglalaruan ng mga bata, minsan hinuhukay, minsan tinatapon, di nila alam na these are valuable creatures," Ligao Mayor Fernando Gonzales said.
