A magnitude 6.7 earthquake hit Davao Occidental, earlier reported as magnitude 7.1, at around 4:48 a.m. on Tuesday, January 9, 2024.

The strong quake was located 04.87°N, 126.36°E - 119 km S 55° E of Sarangani Island in Sarangani town and has a depth of 76 kilometers.

Intensity IV was felt in Malungon, Alabel, and Kiamba in Sarangani.

Other areas in Mindanao also experienced the intensity of the tremor.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), there is no destructive tsunami threat from this earthquake based on available data.

However, aftershocks are expected, PHIVOLCS added.
