In Villasis, Pangasinan, rows of glass bottles inside a laboratory may seem ordinary at first glance. But a closer look reveals each bottle contains young plants growing through plant tissue culture, a method that allows rapid propagation of crops in a controlled, contaminant-free environment.
Dito po, baby pa lang, nanganganak na," Fredilyn Jane Laroco, head of the Resati Tissue Culture Laboratory, said.
This process enables farmers to mass-produce healthier and disease-free crops, particularly bananas, onions, and garlic.
For students like Hanna Mae Bautista, an agriculture student, the technology offers business opportunities.
"Mapaparamami ko po siya at pwede ko po siyang ibenta sa market," she said.
The laboratory is open to farmers who want to learn more about plant tissue culture.
