Romeo Dacanay, a Samar-born solar artisan who has found an artistic passion in burning hand-sculpted portraits using a sunlit magnifying lens, owns a collection of GMA Network-inspired artworks that he voluntarily made in celebration of the National Arts Month this February.
Dacanay, 40, flexed his creations by sending them to the official Facebook page of GMA Regional TV News, a collection that boasts wooden rectangular planks with hand-stenciled logos of GMA Regional TV, GMA Integrated News, 24 Oras, and Unang Hirit.
As with his other solar artworks, the outline features a natural-looking burnt coal-black color with rich dark pigments, all thanks to being set ablaze by a magnifying glass.
The Samareño artist said it’s part of his efforts to personally celebrate the country’s Arts Month.
Dacanay also sent a time-lapse video of his actual creative process– from sketching the logo, to chiseling its borders, before finally torturing the wood plank with a magnifying lens under direct sunlight.
This way, he’s able to give life and color to a carefully carved portrait.
The 40-year-old artist, palpably a fan of GMA Network’s news and public affairs programs, also showed other Kapuso-inspired artworks that he created from way back, including logos of GMA Integrated News, 24 Oras, and Unang Hirit, as well as a portrait of award-winning news pillar Mel Tiangco.
Dacanay was recently featured by GMA Regional TV News when he partook in the Bahandi: Eastern Visayas Trade Fair last October 2024.
