“Viva Apung Lucia, pwera sakit!”

Thousands of devotees chanted and danced in celebration of the Kuraldal Festival in Sasmuan, Pampanga, honoring the town’s patron, Apung Lucia, believed to grant miracles.

The festival, held annually, draws crowds who believe in the healing powers of Apung Lucia.

Many devotees pray for good health, abundant harvests, business success, and even the gift of children.

“It’s Kuraldal season… most likely people are asking for a child or blessings for their business ventures and health. Kaya nga may sigaw tayo, ‘Viva Apung Lucia, pwera sakit,’” Jason Salenga, Tourism Officer of Sasmuan, said.

Salenga said the tradition has been alive for nearly 400 years.

To fulfill their prayers, devotees perform the ritual Kuraldal dance.

The term “Kuraldal” comes from the Spanish word “curar,” which means “to heal.”

The festival begins on the Feast of the Three Kings and lasts for five days, combining dancing, music, and community rituals.

“Idinadaan ang dasal sa pagsayaw ng Kuraldal kasama yung mga elderlies, musiko, at hermana… Parang you sway, then other steps niya yung jumping and parang polka,” Salenga explained.

For the people of Sasmuan, miracles are not just blessings from Apung Lucia but also the strength to overcome daily challenges.
