While waiting for their children to finish classes at Malued Elementary School in Dagupan City, a group of parents has found a unique way to support their children's education—by making and selling rags.
The group, called "Retaso to Peso," started in July 2024 and has been producing rags near the school’s barangay gym.
They were taught how to make the rags by another group that specialized in the craft.
"Doon kami natutong gumawa, noong natuto na kami, doon na kami bumuo ng grupo namin," Emily Terrado, one of the members, said.
Apart from rags, they also create pot holders.
A non-government organization supplies them with fabric to sustain their small business.
"'Yung tubo hati-hatian namin... para sa anak namin, dagdag baon na po," Rosalia Birot, another member, added.
As of this writing, the group consists of only six members, but they are teaching more parents to expand their initiative.
"Kung maraming benta, doon kinukuha ang baon ng mga bata," Jovy Aquino, another member, said.
The barangay council has been supporting their livelihood and encouraging residents to purchase their handmade products.
Each set of three rags is sold for P100, while each piece of pot holder costs P10.
