The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) and the local government of Calasiao, Pangasinan, commemorated former President Emilio Aguinaldo's brief stay in the town on November 14, 1899 during the Philippine Revolution.

Aguinaldo, leading the revolution against Spanish and American forces, traveled to Calasiao by train after relocating his base from Bayambang, Pangasinan.

He and his forces sought refuge at the Calasiao Church plaza while continuing the struggle for Filipino independence.

"Nang mapadaan po si Emilio Aguinaldo sa pamayanang ito, hinahabol siya ng mga Amerikano upang dakpin at kitlin ang damdaming makabayang Pilipino," Alvin Alcid, NHCP Deputy Executive Director for Programs and Projects, said.

To honor this moment in history, a historical marker now stands in front of Calasiao’s municipal hall as part of the 125th anniversary celebrations of Philippine independence.

"Alam niyo ho ba kung ano ang kinain ni Aguinaldo dito sa bayan? Nilagang manok na may asparagus at pansit henoy," Mayor Kevin Roy Macanlalay said.

After Calasiao, Aguinaldo continued his journey to Sta. Barbara to escape advancing American forces, traversing mountain trails toward La Union.

"Bitbit nina Aguinaldo ang puso’t damdamin ng mga Pilipino sa hindi pagsakop ng mga taong mananakop," Alcid said.

The commemoration celebrates Aguinaldo's bravery and reminds Filipinos to protect and take pride in their nation's hard-won freedom.
