San Nicolas, Pangasinan celebrated its first Larry Itliong Day to honor the contributions of Filipino-American labor leader Modesto "Larry" Itliong.

Recognized for his dedication to workers' rights and for championing Filipino immigrants’ welfare in the U.S., Itliong’s legacy was celebrated by local youth, teachers, and community leaders.

One of the guest speakers, GMA Network award-winning journalist Howie Severino, emphasized the importance of good journalism and Itliong’s impact on society.

Severino also encouraged the young to work on improving life in the Philippines so that going abroad to work will not be necessary for survival.

"'Yung mensahe ko para sa mga kabataan, pagbutihin natin ang buhay rito sa atin para hindi kailangan mangibang bayan para makapaghanapbuhay. Kapag mangingibang bayan tayo [dapat] para magbakasyon lang," he said.

Severino also taught attendees about Baybayin, the ancient Filipino script.

The event also featured GMA Pinoy TV led by GMA International’s First Vice President Joseph Jerome Francia who highlighted the day’s value in understanding Filipino history, especially for younger Filipinos.

"Ito ay nakapakahalagang araw sa buhay ng Filipino-American community," he said.

Born in San Nicolas in 1913, Itliong became a prominent figure in the fight for fair rights for workers, farmers, and immigrants.

The celebration marks a step toward deeper awareness of Itliong’s contributions and his enduring legacy in the fight for equality and labor rights.
