The first pet funeral parlor in Cebu City is opened by a family of pet lovers who wants to offer more decent memorial service to fur babies through the process of aquamation.
GMA Regional TV Balitang Bisdak checked on the service wherein the body of a dog was prepared for memorial service.
Similar to the wake of a human being, the dog was also placed first in a room decorated with flowers where fur parents and the rest of the family are allowed a 30-minute stay for viewing to honor and to say proper goodbyes to the pet before the body undergoes aquamation.
The pet owner, however, did not grant the news team the chance to put the process on video.
The owner of the pet funeral parlor did not also allow a video on the entire process, but it was explained that aquamation is done through water-based equipment, unlike cremation that uses heat. It takes a long process to reduce the bones of the dog into ashes, whitish in color, with texture like flour.
The remains are placed in an urn the way human ashes are kept on post-cremation.
The urn comes with a desk photo frame for the picture of the pet, one side of the frame is for the dedication.
The pet owner said that memorial service rates start at P7,000 depending on the size and the weight of the pet. The services are not limited to cats and dogs, but include other domesticated animals.
The pet aquamation service in Cebu City began in June 2024 inspired by personal experiences in handling the funeral of fur babies.
“Sa una, magpa-cremate gyud mi sa among fur babies. Nadugay nangita mi og alternative kay lainan mi sa thought ba nga sunogon, until we learned of aquamation,” Stephanie Tan, daughter of the owner, said.
Stephanie pointed out that aquamation is an alternative to the traditional fire cremation, offering a "more peaceful, more gentle, more eco-friendly way" to bid farewell to a “member of the family."
