In a series of Facebook posts on Monday, the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) has fervently called on the public– fur parents and non-pet owners alike– to show compassion and mercy to pets, especially the stray animals looking for shelter amid the onslaught of Tropical Storm Enteng.

PAWS URGES FOR RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERSHIP

“We urge all pet owners to take every possible precaution to protect their pets during these challenging times. In times of crisis, their survival is entirely in your hands,” said the animal welfare group.

PAWS urged the public to “be prepared,” “be resourceful,” and to “never leave behind” pets even in the face of difficult times.

“Have your evacuation plan and emergency go-kit ready, complete with essentials like pet food, water, first aid supplies, and medical records. Make sure you know how and where to safely transport your pets,” PAWS reminded.

The advocacy group also noted that everyday household items such as bins and boxes are viable alternatives to pet carriers, should the need arise.

PAWS passionately called on fur parents to, to the best of their ability, consider bringing along their fur babies even during emergency situations. “Our pets are family and should never be abandoned in difficult times. If, for any compelling reason, you absolutely cannot take them with you, PLEASE UNCAGE AND UNCHAIN THEM to give them a fighting chance.”

COMPASSION FOR STRAY ANIMALS

In a separate post, PAWS also reminded the public to extend their compassion to homeless animals who, during times of calamity such as a typhoon onslaught, “are just as vulnerable as any living being.”

“With unforgiving weather, the streets become an especially terrifying place for homeless animals… yet they are often left to endure these crises without a shred of safety or security,” they added.

The animal welfare organization pointed out a number of ways through which capable citizens can be of crucial help to these stray animals, such as offering them shelter, food, water, and veterinary care if possible.

“Let’s also not allow our compassion to stop at offering temporary relief in difficult times. We must unite as a community to end pet homelessness so that no more animals are left to suffer through the seasons on the streets. By taking proactive steps today, we can ensure no animal ever has to face the elements alone again,” PAWS emphasized.
