Ilocos Norte celebrated the 100th birthday of Magdalena Gamayo, known as Lola Dalen, a revered National Living Treasure and a key figure in preserving the art of Abel weaving on August 14, 2024.

Gamayo is celebrated for her exceptional contributions to the traditional art of Abel weaving, earning her the title of National Living Treasure from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.

The celebration was attended by Lola Dalen’s only grandchild, Sanny May Baoec, who traveled from Taguig City.

Although Baoec never met her mother, who passed away during childbirth, Gamayo provided a loving and nurturing presence throughout her life.

Baoec shared heartfelt messages wishing for Gamayo’s continued health and strength.

"Sana lola bigyan pa po kayo ng Panginoong Diyos ng mahabang buhay, bigyan pa kayo ng lakas para makasama namin kayo sa mundong ito na naglilingkod sa ating Panginoong Diyos," she said.

Gamayo, in return, expressed her deep appreciation for the love and support she has received from her community and the nation.

"Agyamanak amin kadakayo amin naayat a sumarsarungkar ken mangipatpateg kanyak, nangnangrina ni Apo, to [is] pagyamanak pay [is] isu ti ammok a nangted pay ti adda a kasasaad ko," she said.

FASHION SHOW TRIBUTE

In honor of Gamayo’s contributions, an Inabel-inspired fashion show was held.

Local models and renowned fashion designers from Ilocos Norte showcased garments made from the traditional Inabel fabric.

OFFICIAL RECOGNITION

The celebration was further marked by a declaration from Malacañang Palace, recognizing August 13, 2024, to August 12, 2025, as the Centenarian Year for Gamayo.

Gamayo’s life and work symbolize the meticulous craftsmanship of Inabel weaving, embodying the spirit and resilience of the Ilocano people.

Her legacy will continue to be a cherished part of Filipino culture.
