The nine-municipality pride of Surigao del Norte in Mindanao, also billed as the Surfing Capital of the Philippines, has been named the best destination to visit in Southeast Asia by travel magazine Lonely Planet.

Based on the global travel guide’s “7 of the best places to visit in Southeast Asia” article, Siargao’s “quality surfing,” “live music performances,” and the brand of Filipino hospitality within its warmly welcoming local community are some of the reasons why this tropical paradise is a must-visit.

The magazine also mentioned the world-famous Cloud 9 break, known as one of the globe’s best waves for surfers.

Aside from Siargao’s rich and colorful night life at local bars and cafes, other activities such as cave hopping, yoga classes, and even ice baths were spotlighted in the article.

The travel guide’s tip: spend at least a week on Siargao to experience the “best of the island and explore beyond the main town.”

Siargao bested six other SEA destinations. Second on the list is Amed, a coastal area in northeast Bali known for its diving and snorkeling sites; while Cao Bang, which has some of the “most impressive natural sites” in Vietnam placed third.

Rounding out the list are Khao Sok National Park in Thailand “best for animal lovers,” Luang Prabang in Laos “best for its Buddhist culture,” Penang, Malaysia “best for its history and culture,” and Gili Air, Indonesia “best for relaxation.”

The Department of Tourism, meanwhile, has acknowledged the recognition.

In an official statement released on Monday, July 29, DOT welcomed the “exciting news” regarding Siargao ranking first on Lonely Planet’s list.

“Siargao is a destination that balances adventure and excitement with tranquility and sustainability, catering to all types of travelers,” the statement said.

“The acknowledgment given to Siargao is a victory for the island and its peoples and a proud moment for the entire country. This underscores the growing global appreciation for the Philippines’ diverse and breathtaking landscapes, the richness of our culture, and the warmth and love of our people,” it added.
