Some persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) at the Puerto Princesa City Jail Male Dormitory have found a meaningful way to mark the Holy Week — by weaving palaspas or palm fronds for Palm Sunday.
For many of them, like 38-year-old Michael (not his real name), this simple act holds deep meaning.
“Naging panata na namin ang paggawa ng palaspas at pagpunta sa simbahan tuwing Linggo ng Palaspas. Palagi kong hiling ang magandang kalusugan para sa akin at sa aking pamilya,” he said.
The PDLs' handmade palaspas will be blessed during the Palm Sunday Mass.
According to Jail Officer 3 Joefrie Anglo, information officer of the BJMP Mimaropa, the activity is more than just creative expression.
“Aside from showcasing their [PDLs] artistry, in essence and reality, the palaspas serves as a symbol of welcoming Christ into both our hearts and our lives,” Anglo said.
He also reminded the PDLs to hold on to their faith during this sacred time.
The tradition of weaving palm fronds is deeply rooted in Filipino Catholic culture and is especially observed during Holy Week.
It symbolizes Jesus Christ's arrival in Jerusalem, where He was welcomed by the people waving palm branches.
Aside from making palaspas, the BJMP said the PDLs will also join in other spiritual activities, including the ‘pabasa’ and ‘via Crucis’, as part of their faith and spiritual formation.
