The groundbreaking of the first waste-to-energy facility in Western Visayas took place on Friday, April 4, 2025.

The P2.3-billion Integrated Solid Waste Management Facility will rise in Iloilo City that aims to regulate disposal of solid waste and to generate renewable energy.

The project is seen to process 475 tons of waste daily in Iloilo City and 115 tons from Metro Pacific Iloilo Water, and to produce approximately 3.5 megawatts of electric power from biogas and 163 tons of refuse-derived fuel (RDF).

Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Maria Antonia Loyzaga, in her message, said that the facility is beneficial not just in waste management but also in harnessing renewable energy and its positive impact to the economy.
