Two Philippine cockatoos identified as red-vented cockatoos were spotted at a watershed area in Loboc town, Province of Bohol.

The sighting happened during an exploratory survey of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) 7 with the Bohol Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (Bohol-PENRO) on Monday, November 25, 2024.

The cockatoo is referred to locally as “abukay.”

According to a DENR 7 post, the two red-vented cockatoos were seen in the vicinity of the Loboc Watershed, one of many protected areas in the island of Bohol.

The “abukay” is one of the species of parrots endemic to the Philippines, but is now among the List of Critically Endangered Wildlife Species in the country.

DENR 7 disclosed that the recent sighting is the first after seven long years.
