The “Pasko sa Pajo” celebration in Lapu-Lapu City has opened officially, with 105 entries to the “parol” (lantern)-making contest.
The lanterns that adorn the center island of the city have been lighted as well.
In a ceremony, lights of Christmas symbols and other decorations at the Barangay Hall of Pajo and in the vicinity were switched on simultaneously to mark the official opening of the “Light Up a Tree” tradition.
After the switch-on at the barangay hall, officials proceeded to the intersection on ML Quezon National Highway for the official lighting of the Christmas decorations at the center island.
The event is staged annually in Barangay Pajo since 2013; that was the time when Mayor Junard Chan was yet the chairman of the said barangay.
Incumbent Barangay Chairman Lyndon Guba, at that time, was one of the councilmen.
The first center island along ML Quezon Highway is adorned with Christmas lights that resemble reindeers. Owners and operators of establishments in Barangay Pajo have been invited to participate in the “Adopt a Reindeer” project.
The reindeers will bear the names of participating establishments. Owners and operators will get the opportunity to decorate the reindeers themselves, this was further learned.
The succeeding center islands bear lanterns crafted by members of various sectors such as urban poor groups, women, senior citizens, Lupong Tagapamayapa, motorcycle drivers, among others.
As the lanterns are entries to a contest, one of the criteria is the use of indigenous and recyclable materials.
The first-place winner will receive P30,000 in cash; P20,000 for second place, P10,000 for third place, and P2,500 as consolation prizes.
