Nearly 160 students in Milaor, Camarines Sur received free vision screenings from the Integrated Philippine Association of Optometrists (IPAO), providing crucial help for those with vision problems.

Before heading to work, Emerlina Tero brought her Grade 3 granddaughter, Gianna, to the Milaor Central School for a vision screening.

Gianna, who has been struggling with blurry vision, was a key beneficiary of the free eye examination.

Emerlina noticed Gianna's difficulty seeing the blackboard from a distance, which led her to seek professional help.

"Ano po siya, pag malayo po sa blackboard, lumalapit po siya para makita niya," Emerlina said.

Gianna's condition might be nearsightedness, a common vision problem that requires expert consultation.

The free vision screening was a significant help for families like Tero's.

Dr. Bergitta Rosari, President of the IPAO Camarines Sur Chapter, said besides nearsightedness (myopia), common issues like astigmatism and hyperopia can lead to serious problems if left untreated.

"Itong mga bata, dito kami mag-uumpisa dahil minsan amblyopic na—ang isa lang na mata ang malinaw, ang isa Malabo... para ma-prevent yung blindness para hindi tumaas yung grado—[yan] yung worst case," Rosari said.

The vision screening involved measuring visual acuity using the Snellen chart and prototype glasses.

After the screening, specialists recommended if further consultations or corrective lenses are necessary.
