Murdered businessman Yulo faced raps for bouncing checks

The businessman who was shot to death along EDSA last Sunday was facing several lawsuits over bouncing checks and had once filed a  grave threat case, investigators said on Tuesday.

GMA News' Jun Veneracion's reported on GMA 7 news program "24 Oras" that victim Jose Luis Yulo was involved in up to 14 Bouncing-Checks Law cases.

"It's normal, minsan na magka-bouncing check ang mga big boss o mga big time. May hinahawakan silang businesses, ninsan nade-delayan. Nakakagulat lang, ba't marami?" said Mandaluyong Police chief Senior Superintendent Moises Villaceran Jr.

Investigators were also looking at a grave-threat case Yulo had filed, though it was still unclear whom the case was filed against.

"We will set an appointment with the family," Villaceran added.  "Kausapin namin sila para malaman ang history or other details pertaining to Mr. Yulo, lalo na sa mga cases. Baka alam nila ito."

Last Sunday, suspect on a black motorcycle drove up on the passenger side of Yulo's van and shot the businessman eight times. The van's driver, Allan Santos, was also killed in the shooting, while passenger, Esmeralda Ignacio, was wounded.

A loaded Colt .38 snub-nosed revolver was found among Yulo's belongings. However, it was still unknown whether the pistol was registered to the businessman.

"Despite of the gun ban, bakit may dala siyang baril? Kasi baka mayroon siyang threat," remaked Eastern Police District Director Chief Superintendent Bernabe Balba.

While police investigators were studying the three victims' phones, they were having difficulties with Yulo's locked unit.

Meanwhile, there were still no new leads on the motorcycle-riding gunmen. — Margaret Claire Layug/DVM, GMA News
