A(H1N1) Update: 4,694 flu cases in 30 countries


MANILA, Philippines – The number of officially reported human cases of Influenza A(H1N1) infection worldwide climbed by seven percent – from 4,379 (Update 24) on May 10 to 4,694 (Update 25) on May 11, data culled by GMANews.TV from the World Health Organization showed. The number of countries infected with the disease increased to 29 from 30, with the inclusion of Norway with two confirmed cases. The Associated Press, however, reported on May 12 (May 11, US time) that Cuba reported its first confirmed case. The development, however, has yet to be included in WHO’s statistics. From a previous global death toll of 48, the number of fatalities increased to 53 – 48 in Mexico, three in the United States, one in Canada, and one in Costa Rica. A(H1N1) cases increased in 11 countries, which include: * US – 2,532 cases from 2,254 * Canada – 280 from 280 * Brazil – 8 from 6 * China – 2 (one from the mainland and one from Hong Kong Special Administrative Region) * Colombia – 3 from 1 * El Salvador – 4 from 2 * France – 13 from 12 * Panama – 15 from 3 * Spain – 95 from 93 * Sweden – from 2 to 1 * United Kingdom – 47 from 39 The number of cases in the following countries did not change from May 10 to 11: * Mexico – 1, 626 * Costa Rica – 8 * Germany – 11 * Israel – 7 * Italy – 9 * Japan – 4 * Netherlands – 3 * New Zealand – 7 * South Korea – 3 Countries that remained with one case each include: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Denmark, Guatemala, Ireland, Poland, Portugal, and Switzerland. - Sophia Dedace, GMANews.TV
