BY THE NUMBERS
The most accident-prone cities in Metro Manila in 2014
By THINKING MACHINES DATA SCIENCE
What cities in Metro Manila report the highest number of traffic-related deaths and injuries in 2014? To find out, our team at Thinking Machines, a data science consultancy, analysed a data set of 90,258 traffic incidents recorded by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) in 2014. Our sincere thanks to the MMDA for providing us with access to their traffic incident reports.
The MMDA’s database is based on reports of road crashes in police blotter reports and the MMDA’s own traffic reports. In 2014 there were 443 people killed and 20,899 people injured on Metro Manila’s roads, for a total of 21,342 casualties. We define “casualty” as someone who as either injured or killed in a traffic incident.
Quezon City reports most of traffic-related casualties overall
Quezon City recorded the most traffic-related casualties among Metro Manila’s 16 cities and 1 municipality. But this isn’t too surprising, considering Quezon City is by far the most populous city in both Metro Manila and the entire country. As the city’s 2.8 million residents comprise over 23% of the NCR’s entire 11.9 million population, it makes sense that the city’s 5,916 traffic-related casualties would also comprise around 28% of the region’s 21,342 total traffic-related casualties. Quezon City also has NCR’s largest land area.
Parañaque reports most traffic-related casualties per 10,000 residents
Luckily, population information is easily available online for all Metro Manila’s cities. To control for population, we checked how many traffic-related deaths and injuries were recorded per 10,000 residents in a city.
In 2014, Parañaque, San Juan, and Valenzuela all reported more than 25 traffic-related casualties per 10,000 residents, taking the top three spots on the list. Meanwhile, the three cities with the lowest numbers of traffic-related casualties per 10,000 residents were Caloocan, Manila, and Pateros.
Drilling down into the data, the ranking of cities changes when we focus separately on pedestrian, driver, and passenger casualties. Key takeaways:
- Valenzuela was the most dangerous city for pedestrians and passengers
- Parañaque was the most dangerous city for drivers
If you’re on foot, Valenzuela, Muntinlupa, and San Juan are the top three cities with the most dangerous roads, each with around eight pedestrians killed or injured per 10,000 residents. If you’re trying to decide whether to ride or walk, it’s also notable that Pasig City and Pateros were the only two cities where pedestrian casualties outnumbered driver and passenger casualties.
Valenzuela, San Juan, and Quezon City nearly tied for the highest rate of passenger casualties, each with around seven per 10,000 residents. Passengers comprised the minority of traffic-related casualties in each city and overall.
Parañaque, Muntinlupa, and San Juan reported the highest rate of driver casualties for every 10,000 residents. Drivers comprised the majority of traffic-related casualties in all but two Metro Manila cities.
