Wang-wang, here come the major major quotes of 2010

Actions speak louder than words, it is often said, but some words are loud enough on their own. Many of history's events are remembered purely for the quotes associated with them. Here are some one- and two-liners from 2010 that made the news and created the branding for the year gone by. "I will take a thousand bullets for my son. I will die for my son" - Marlene Aguilar, referring to her fugitive son Jason Ivler following his arrest inside their house on January 18, two months after he was charged with the shooting of Renato Victor Ebarle Jr. "Well I am sure after your marriage you have had some insertions..." - Senator Aquilino Pimentel to Sen. Mar Roxas, during a plenary session on January 25 regarding the C5 road project controversy. Roxas, who lost his bid for the vice presidency in the 2010 polls, married broadcaster Korina Sanchez last year. Pimentel apologized the next day through a prayer at the start of the Senate session. "It's a tight schedule but it can be done" - Smartmatic Asia president Cesar Flores on May 4, during the testing and sealing of the PCOS machines used in the country's first national automated elections six days later. Despite dire predictions and numerous glitches, the May 2010 elections were generally considered a success. "I feel confident that we are leaving this nation much stronger than when I came to office but I leave that for history to judge" – from the June 23 farewell address of outgoing president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, whose nine-year tenure was marked by corruption scandals and cheating allegations. "Kayo ang boss ko, kaya’t hindi maaaring hindi ako makinig sa mga utos ninyo" - President Aquino’s promise to the people during his inaugural speech on June 30 "Walang lamangan, walang padrino, at walang pagnanakaw. Walang wang-wang, walang counterflow, walang tong" - one of the most applauded parts of President Aquino’s inaugural speech. The late strongman Ferdinand Marcos had issued Presidential Decree 96 in 1973 limiting the use of sirens on the road, but implementation has been lax. True to his word, Aquino did not use sirens on his way to the military headquarters on July 2 to give his first address to the armed forces. He was forty minutes late. "In my 22 years of existence I can say that there is nothing major major, I mean, problem that I have done in my life" - Miss Universe 4th runner up Venus Raj, who represented the Philippines, in the question and answer portion of the pageant last August 24. The phrase has since gone viral and can be seen and heard everywhere, including the Philippine Star newspaper where Raj now has a regular column entitled, what else but "Major Major." "Damaso" – word written on a whiteboard that celebrity tour guide Carlos Celdran held up during mass at the Manila Cathedral on September 30 to protest the opposition of the Catholic Church to the reproductive health bill, before he was taken away by the police. Damaso is the name of a corrupt and womanizing priest in Jose Rizal's Noli Me Tangere. "Big mistake to correct a big wrong decision" – cryptic sign posted by former Senior Inspector Rolando Mendoza on the window of the bus where he took 25 Hong Kong tourists and Filipinos hostage on August 23 to call attention to his alleged unfair dismissal from the service. Mendoza and eight tourists died in a bungled rescue attempt that became the first serious crisis for the Aquino administration. "Hindi pa po ako nanananghalian kaya pumunta ako sa Emerald … para dun ang extension ng command post" – Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim to the Incident Investigation and Review Committee (IIRC) tasked to probe the hostage crisis, justifying why he left the crime scene at the critical moment when the hostage-taker opened fire on his hostages, even though he was the crisis committee chairman at the time. "There is no crime unless there is a law that defines it and provides penalty. Not all mistakes are criminal" – Presidential Legal Counsel Ed de Mesa on the palace review of the IIRC report on the August 23 hostage, following criticisms that Aquino’s shooting buddy Rico Puno was absolved because of his close ties with the president "If you are going to help this country, you've got to be in the country. If any of you have little ambitions of going abroad so that you can earn more, please disabuse yourself, because by doing that you are essentially betraying the people in the Philippines who trusted you and who invested their money in you" – Prof. Winnie Monsod on October 5, in her last lecture to her Economics 100 class at the University of the Philippines in Diliman. A video posted by student Jedo Enriquez on YouTube has recorded 413,555 views to date. Some found her message inspiring, while others strongly disagreed. "Well, bata si Mai. Baka ‘yung akala niyang gawain na simple ay hindi niya na-realize ang implications" – President Aquino on his aide Mai Mislang's controversial tweets about the wine, traffic, and men in Vietnam. Mislang kept her job despite severe public criticism. "Boxing is not about killing each other. It's about entertainment for everybody" – Manny Pacquiao after winning his 12-round fight on November 15 with Margarito, voicing his concern about the serious injuries suffered by his opponent. "Nagkamali kami sa choice ng address... Di namin naisip may porn site" – Tourism Secretary Alberto Lim on the heavily-criticized Pilipinas Kay Ganda slogan, which bore a remarkable resemblance to Poland's tourism logo and led Internet users to a porn website with a similar address. "Microsoft Word program does not have a function that raises an alarm when original materials are cut up or pruned. The portions that remain simply blend in with the rest of the manuscript, adjusting the footnote number and removing any clue that what should stick together had just been severed" – portion of the Supreme Court’s 25-page ruling promulgated on October 12 that cleared Associate Justice Mariano del Castillo of plagiarism charges in his controversial ruling on World War II comfort women. "Unless reconsidered, this Court would unfortunately be remembered as the Court that made 'malicious intent' an indispensable element of plagiarism and that made computer-keying errors an exculpatory fact in charges of plagiarism" –Associate Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno, the newest member of the Supreme Court, in her dissenting opinion on the del Castillo plagiarism case "Regrettably, we did not extend any help until we were sure that the leak was from our pipeline. We should have been more compassionate, more caring, and more sensitive" - First Philippine Industrial Corporation officer-in-charge Anthony Mabasa, apologizing to affected residents of West Tower Condominium during a Nov. 15 Senate hearing on the FPIC fuel pipeline leak. "Satan, get away from us!" - Eric B. Manalang, President of Pro-life Philippines, to supporters of the RH Bill on Nov. 20 outside the Manila Cathedral. "Dahan-dahan ko silang napapatawad, dahil ang Diyos nga nagpapatawad, tayo pa? Pero kailangan rin sila magawaran ng kaparusahan" – Catherine Nuñez, a year after her son Victor Nuñez of UNTV was killed in the Maguindanao massacre on November 23, 2009. “It’s best for the person and his or her family to hide and go abroad rather than stay here and be identified" – advice of retired Archbishop Oscar Cruz to the winner of the P740-million Grand Lotto jackpot, the largest in the history of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes. This should be easy enough for the 60-year old balikbayan from New York who claimed the prize on Dec. 9; he was on a "sentimental journey" in the Philippines when he placed his bet using the "Lucky Pick" method in Olongapo City, Zambales. "If they can't take the heat, then don't watch it!" – Bb. Pilipinas-World 2007 Maggie Wilson, on the negative reactions to her prenuptial video with construction magnate Victor Consunji posted on YouTube prior to their wedding in December. "Dapat pa ba tayong maniwala sa ating justice system?" – aggrieved father and husband Lauro Vizconde, after the SC acquitted Hubert Webb and six other suspects on December 14 in the massacre that took the lives of his wife and two daughters in 1991. - YA, GMANews.TV
