Over 300 families affected by flooding in SOCCSKSARGEN, Zamboanga City

More than 300 families were affected by flooding in SOCCSKSARGEN and Zamboanga City due to heavy rains caused by the southwest monsoon intensified by Typhoon Kiyapo.

Floodwaters surged through the river in Barangay Calumpang, General Santos City after heavy rains poured on Thursday, July 23, 2026.

The strong current washed away gradually portions of a house and a tree to the river.

Residents were alarmed when a man was seen standing in the middle of the swollen river despite the strong current. Moments later, the man attempted to cross but was carried away by the rushing waters.

The man survived and managed to reach the riverbank safely.

Several houses were also flooded, prompting residents to move to the barangay's evacuation center where authorities continue to conduct profiling of families affected by the flood.

"Sa kakusog sa tubig nilapas ang tubig didto sa ubos. Naay dike nga mura'g nabuwang niagi ang tubig mipadulong sa mga balay-balay," Barangay Calumpang councilman, Nolan Salabao, said.

Sarangani

In Sarangani Province, a house located along the riverbank in Riverside, Barangay Poblacion, Glan was caught on video being wept away gradually by floodwaters. Later, other houses were also carried away.

Raging floodwaters also damaged the detour at Aquino Bridge in Barangay Glan Padidu. Despite the damage, the bridge remains passable to light vehicles only.

A house near a creek was carried away and damaged, while a portion of a road collapsed in Barangay Kyo-gam.

Maasim

In Maasim town, floodwaters rushing into houses in Sitio Dabu, Barangay Nomoh were captured on video, prompting residents to evacuate to safer areas.

Residents also worked together to carry a pregnant woman who was about to give birth after she was caught in floodwaters. She was rescued safely.

Several houses were also submerged while rescuers assisted residents affected by the flooding.

Malapitan

In Malapatan town, a man was rescued after he was trapped in a river when the water level rose suddenly.

However, the bridge connecting Malapatan to Glan was closed to the public after it was damaged by severe flooding. Only one lane of the bridge is currently passable for motorists as restoration works continue.

Kiamba

In Kiamba town, a creek overflowed causing flooding in several roads and houses in Barangays Kutabao and Badtasan.

Based on initial data from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), around 314 families evacuated to various evacuation centers across Sarangani, including 213 families from Malapatan, 70 frrom Glan, and 31 from Maitum.

"Continuous atung monitoring sa mga kadalanan ug mga tulay…naa pud mi SAR Team anytime ready mu-respond," Sarangani Police Provincial Director, Col. Jerone Orville Panganiban, said.

Sultan Kudarat

Meanwhile, in Sultan Kudarat, floodwaters reached waist-deep, submerging several houses in Barangay Caridad, Lambayong town.

Some residents were seen working together to carry a motorcycle that was stuck in the flood.

Authorities continue to assess the situation in the area.

State weather bureau PAGASA said the continuous rains experienced in the region were caused by the southwest monsoon or Habagat.

Cotabato

A portion of the Arakan-Davao Road in Cotabato was also closed after heavy rains caused landslide in the area.

According to the Department of Public Works and Highways-SOCCSKSARGEN (DPWH-12), the affected section will remain closed to motorists while clearing operations are ongoing.

Zamboanga City

Several motorists in Zamboanga City were also affected by flooding.

PAGASA said the rains experienced in other parts of Mindanao were also caused by the Habagat, which was intensified by Typhoon Kiyapo. — GMA Regional TV
