Ten critically endangered Philippine hanging parrots, locally known as kulasisi, were rescued from an alleged illegal wildlife trade operation in Barangay Pangao-an, Magpet, Cotabato, on July 8, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)-Soccsksargen said on Tuesday.

“CENRO Matalam found that the rescued kulasisi were allegedly being offered for sale for P1,000 each, highlighting the continuing threat posed by illegal wildlife trafficking despite intensified conservation and enforcement efforts,” the local DENR said.

The birds were released back into the wild on July 9.

The DENR said the Philippine hanging parrot is classified as a critically endangered species under DENR Administrative Order No. 2019-09 due to habitat loss and poaching.

"The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) reminds the public that the collection, hunting, possession, transport, and sale of wildlife without the necessary permits are prohibited under Republic Act No. 9147, or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act," the agency said.

"Violations involving critically endangered species may result in imprisonment of up to four years and fines of up to P300,000," it added. — MCG, GMA News
