Kanlaon Volcano had 14 volcanic quakes —PHIVOLCS

The Kanlaon Volcano in Negros had 14 volcanic earthquakes on Friday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said Saturday.

The volcano, which straddles the provinces of Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental, also emitted 1,857 tonnes of sulfur dioxide on Friday.

Weak plumes were seen rising out of the volcanic crater and reached up to 75 meters high. The plumes drifted westward.

PHIVOLCS said the edifice of Kanlaon Volcano is still inflated.

Alert Level 3 (Intensified Unrest/Magmatic Unrest) remains in effect at Kanlaon Volcano.

PHIVOLCS said the six-kilometer radius from the summit of the volcano should remain evacuated.

Likewise, flying any aircraft close to the volcano should not be allowed, it added.

Kanlaon Volcano may possibly pose hazards such as the following, according to PHIVOLCS:

  • sudden explosive eruption;
  • lava flow or effusion;
  • ashfall;
  • pyroclastic density current or PDC;
  • rockfall
  • lahars during heavy rains.
