Kanlaon Volcano logged 19 volcanic earthquakes —PHIVOLCS

Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island is still under Alert Level 3

A total of 19 volcanic earthquakes were recorded in Kanlaon Volcano on Tuesday, according to the bulletin of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on Wednesday.

This was higher compared to the 15 volcanic earthquakes reported on Monday.

Kanlaon Volcano emitted 3,503 tonnes of sulfur dioxide gas on Tuesday, which was fewer compared to the 4,685 tonnes reported in the previous bulletin.

A moderate emission of plumes reaching up to 150 meters tall and continuous degassing were also observed from the volcano. These plumes drifted to the west and southwest.

Kanlaon Volcano’s edifice remained inflated.

Alert Level 3 is still in effect over Kanlaon Volcano, which means there is a high level of volcanic unrest. Magmatic intrusion to shallow levels of the edifice is driving unrest, with indications that a hazardous eruption could occur in weeks.

Possible hazards from the volcano include sudden explosive eruption, lava flow or effusion, ashfall, pyroclastic density current (PDC), rockfall, and lahars during heavy rains.

The volcano's danger zone was expanded to a radius of six kilometers from the summit crater or active vent. —Joviland Rita/KG, GMA Integrated News
