Kanlaon Volcano rocked by 11 earthquakes —PHIVOLCS

Eleven volcanic earthquakes, including two volcanic tremors that lasted 3 to 4 minutes long, were recorded at the Kanlaon Volcano, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said Sunday morning.
Based on PHIVOLCS’ latest bulletin, the Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island also released 4,328 tonnes of sulfur dioxide, as well as a moderate 150 meter tall plume that drifted northwest and west.
The volcano’s edifice also remained inflated.
Throughout January 2025, the Kanlaon Volcano Observatory recorded around 70 ash emission events. Research specialist Perly Sianson said that the ash emission events are one of the indicators that the volcano may possibly erupt again.
Alert Level 3 remains hoisted over Kanlaon Volcano, signaling a magmatic unrest following its eruption on December 9, 2024.
PHIVOLCS has recommended evacuation of residents from the six-kilometer radius around the volcano’s summit.
Possible hazards that may occur include sudden explosive eruption, lava flow or effusion, ashfall, pyroclastic density current, rockfall, and lahars during heavy rains.
Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island erupted twice in 2024, displacing close to 50,000 individuals or over 11,000 families in 32 barangays in Western Visayas and Central Visayas, according to the Office of Civil Defense 6 in a report on December 26, 2024.—Giselle Ombay/RF, GMA Integrated News
