Grass fire hits mountainous area in Ilocos Norte


The Office of Civil Defense reported a grass fire affecting a mountainous area of Carasi, Ilocos Norte.

The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) on Friday reported a grass fire affecting a mountainous area of Carasi, Ilocos Norte.

“On 30 January 2025, 2:00 PM, a grass fire incident was reported in the mountainous part of Carasi, llocos Norte. The cause of fire is undetermined,” the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said in an update as of 10 a.m. 

“An estimate of 200 to 300 hectares were affected by grass fire,” it added.

According to the initial information from the OCD, the grass fire hit some parts of Barangay Barbaquezo and Barangay Virbira.

“Estimated damage is still to be determined. Investigation report to follow,” the OCD said.

 

Photos showed the fire lit up the mountainous area at night. A video showed thick smoke covered the area in the morning.

A total of 87 responders were deployed to put out the grass fire, according to the NDRRMC. One Sokol air asset was deployed for aerial reconnaissance and heli-bucket operations.

Authorities were securing the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ (DENR) greening program, coffee plantation, and the Mt. Lamin campsite.

Responders were also establishing a fire break to stop the further spread of the grass fire.
