Heavy rains cause floods, landslides in parts of Mindanao, Luzon

Heavy rains in several parts of Mindanao and Luzon caused floods and landslides in the first week of 2025.

According to a Balitanghali report on Wednesday, floodwater entered several houses in Alabel, Sarangani.

Large rocks and mud brought by floods blocked portions of the National Road, leading authorities to rescue stranded residents from cut-off communities.

Floods also occurred in Koronadal, South Cotabato, stranding motorists along affected roads. Landslides were also reported.

A backhoe fell down a ravine after floods weakened the ground underneath it. No casualties were recorded from the incident.

Meanwhile, the Albay Provincial Information Office reported an overflow at the Tinapian Spillway (Mulakbugak) and the Balasbas spillway on Wednesday morning.

Further monitoring on major spillways and rivers are being conducted by the Manito Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office to assess further possible overflow.

Continuous, heavy rainfall warning advisory was also issued in Albay, threatening low-lying areas with landslides, flooding and the river swelling to dangerous levels.

Work and class suspensions were declared in some areas of Albay.

PAGASA’s daily weather forecast on Wednesday morning said that the Shear Line will affect the eastern parts of Southern Luzon and Visayas, while the Northeast Monsoon will affect the Northern and Central parts of Luzon.
