Security measures beefed up for Feast of Black Nazarene in Cagayan de Oro
Police are beefing up security for the Feast of the Black Nazarene in Cagayan de Oro on January 9, 2025, as thousands of devotees are expected to join the Traslacion.
According to the Police Regional Office-Northern Mindanao (PRO-10), around 700 security personnel will be deployed to ensure public safety during the vigil and procession.
These security personnel are from the Philippine National Police (PNP), Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), and Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP).
Members of the Civil Disturbance Management Teams and Quick Response Teams will also provide additional support.
PRO-10 also activated its Reactionary Standby Support Force for immediate deployment and maximize the involvement of force multipliers.
“The Feast of the Black Nazarene is deeply rooted in the devotion of Filipinos who believe that touching the sacred image or its ropes can bring miracles and healing. The annual event draws massive crowds, necessitating comprehensive security measures to ensure the safety and orderliness of the celebration,” PRO-10 said.
The procession will begin at 6 a.m. at the St. Augustine Cathedral and will pass through Dolores Street, Veles Street, CM Recto Avenue, and will end at the Nazareno Church.
PRO-10 emphasized the importance of public safety during the religious activity.
Devotees are also urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or personality to authorities.
“As this sacred occasion draws near, we are committed to maintaining peace and order while ensuring the safety of all devotees. We are proactively implementing measures to address any security concerns, including enhancing traffic management and deploying personnel to deter any unlawful activities,” PRO-10 Director, Brigadier General Jaysen De Guzman, said.
“Our police force is prepared to respond swiftly to any threats. We urge everyone to cooperate with authorities to make this event safe and successful,” De Guzman added. — GMA Regional TV
