1 reported dead, 1 missing after cargo vessel sinks off Northern Samar

One person is reported dead, while another remains missing as 13 crew members of cargo vessel MV Jherlyn Khatness were rescued after it sank off Lavezares, Northern Samar on Monday afternoon, the Coast Guard Station (CGS) Northern Samar said Tuesday.

According to a statement by the Office of Civil Defense on Tuesday, the incident occurred at around 2:30 p.m. when the ship was struck by rough waves that led to it capsizing.

“The vessel was carrying cement departed from Naga City, Cebu and was enroute to San Jose, Northern Samar, and encountered rough sea conditions, resulting in submersion after being struck by large waves,” CGS Northern Samar acting commander Ensign Brhyl Amay said in a notice to mariners.

The cargo ship had a crew of 15, including its captain, at the time of its sinking.

Initially, the Coast Guard said 10 crew members were rescued while five remain missing.

The sunken vessel is located in the waters off Barangay Balicuatro.

“In this connection, all ships/watercraft transiting the above-mentioned areas are advised to take note of the information and take precautionary measures at all times. Nearby rescue activity is also reported in vicinity seawaters of Barangay Lipata, Allen, Northern Samar,” the Coast Guard said.

“Mariners transiting the area are advised to exercise extreme caution and report any sightings of the missing crew or debris to the nearest Coast Guard Station,” it added.

As of 3:30 p.m., a 63-year old man was reported missing while a 30-year-old man was confirmed dead after the body was found in Biri.

Search and rescue operations continued while the OCD Region 8 provided hygiene kits and further assistance to rescued passengers.

“As search operations continue, the community remains hopeful for the safe recovery of the missing crew member and extends heartfelt condolences to the families affected by this tragedy,” the statement read.

“This incident underscores the dangers faced by maritime operations in challenging weather conditions, prompting renewed calls for improved safety measures in the region,” it continued.
