Magnitude-5.6 quake jolts Burgos, Ilocos Norte — PHIVOLCS

A magnitude-5.6 earthquake hit the municipality of Burgos in Ilocos Norte on Monday morning, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

According to its 11:27 a.m. bulletin, PHIVOLCS data showed that the tectonic earthquake occurred at 10:56 a.m.

It had a depth of 15 kms, recorded off the coast of Burgos.

PHIVOLCS said there are no expected damage following the earthquake, but aftershocks were still expected.

State seismologists initially reported the quake at Bangui town and closer to the Luzon mainland.

Reported intensities—which are based on what people feel and effects on structures and the environment—were listed in the provinces of Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte, Cagayan, and Abra.

The earthquake was felt at Intensity V in Sinait and Cabugao in Ilocos Sur; and in Sarrat, Ilocos Norte.

Intensity IV was experienced in Claveria, Cagayan; and in Tubo, Abra.

Intensity III was reported in Lacub, Abra; and Intensity II in Aparri and Lasam in Cagayan.

Meanwhile, instrumental intensities—which are measured based on accelerometer readings—showed the quake's effect even in Mountain Province.

Based on instrumental intensities, the quake came in at Intensity V in San Nicholas, Ilocos Norte; and Intensity IV in Sinait and Vigan City in Ilocos Sur.

In Cagayan province, Intensity III was logged in Gonzaga; and Intensity II in Peñablanca.

Intensity II was also recorded in Bontoc, Mountain Province; and Intensity I in Candon and Narvacan in Ilocos Sur.

In preparing updates on earthquake intensities, PHIVOLCS has said its personnel and concerned citizens report and verify reported intensities of earthquakes in a specific area. PHIVOLCS has also said that reported intensities are better to report than instrumental intensities because the information can be confirmed by its staff. — Giselle Ombay/ VDV, GMA Integrated News
