Sixteen volcanic earthquakes, including six volcanic tremors that lasted 49 to 84 minutes long, were recorded at the Kanlaon Volcano, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said Sunday.
PHIVOLCS’ latest bulletin also showed that Kanlaon Volcano, located in Negros Island, had two ash emission events that lasted for 43 to 49 minutes.
It also spewed 3,984 tonnes of sulfur dioxide on Saturday, December 28.
A voluminous 1,200 meter tall plume was also released and drifted west.
Kanlaon Volcano is currently under Alert Level 3, signalling a magmatic unrest following its explosive eruption on December 9.
The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) had said it is preparing for the possible raising of the alert level at Kanlaon Volcano as experts see three potential scenarios regarding its situation: a lava flow, a violent eruption, or a plateau in volcanic activity.
The OCD in Region 6 also said the six-kilometer radius permanent danger zone around Kanlaon Volcano may possibly be extended to 10 kilometers due to the threat of lahar flows. —Giselle Ombay/KG, GMA Integrated News
