Man shot dead in Pulupandan, Negros Occidental, allegedly by cop

A police officer in Pulupandan, Negros Occidental is under hospital arrest following the shooting death of another man whom he allegedly had an altercation with.

According to Aileen Pedraso’s report on Saksi on Thursday, 22-year-old Joman Fuentes was killed on Christmas Day, shot in the chest near the basketball court in Barangay Canjusa.

According to the Pulupandan police, the suspect, Police Corporal Armen Alanza, was sitting by himself by a store having a drink at around 1 p.m. when a man approached him and had an argument.

The victim later joined the argument. After leaving for a while, the victim went back to Alanza along with his companions.

“Doon muling nagkagulo at doon na sinuntok ng biktima ang pulis [That’s when the brawl started],” said Police Captain Rowell Peniero, deputy chief of Pulupandan Municipal Police Station.

According to the owner of the store, who witnessed the incident, the police jokingly said he would beat up the victim, but Alanza ended up being punched by the victim.

The victim and his companions allegedly chased Alanza to a basketball court, where they supposedly attempted to take his gun.

The report added that Alanza held onto his gun but due to the brawl, the gun was fired and the victim and his father were shot.

In an exclusive interview with GMA Regional TV, Alanza said he introduced himself as police to the victim and his companions, but they kept beating him up.

“Hindi ko alam na may tinamaan kasi nag-aagawan na [I was not aware somebody was shot since it was chaotic],” Alanza said.

Alanza, who sustained head wounds, is facing homicide and frustrated homicide charges.

Alanza said he also plans to file physical injury charges against the victim’s companions.
