Residents said they felt no earthquake but the concrete walls and foundations of their houses suddenly ruptured. Several houses were totally destroyed while some toppled.
The rupture also misaligned the train tracks that run along the town. The roads in several parts of the town also rose.
Townsfolk said this is the first time such an incident occurred in their area.
Fearing for their safety, the residents evacuated from their homes. There are around 35 families now seeking shelter in the barangay hall.
They are asking the government for assistance, particularly as to the cause of the incident.
According to resident Juvy Cabildo, it was around 9:00 p.m. on Saturday that the ground began to rumble and they heard a sound similar to fireworks. An hour later, portions of the ground in the sitio began to lift or sink.
The train tracks twisted like wire, residents said.
Parts of the highway were also damaged.
The barangay's water source was also damaged, causing concern in the community.
The classroom of the town's school was also destroyed. Classes have been cancelled and the Christmas party will not push as a safety precaution.
The barangay captain said a total of 35 houses were affected,15 of which have been destroyed.
The situation has prompted representatives from the local government to conduct an immediate assessment. Residents are currently not allowed to return to their homes due to the potential danger.
There are still parts of the barangay that are moving, according to most recent reports.—RF, GMA Integrated News
