State of calamity pushed due to power outage in Siargao

Siargao Electric Cooperative Inc. (SIARELCO)

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) of Surigao del Norte has recommended to place Siargao Island under a state of calamity due to the power outage it has experienced since December 1, 2024.

The declaration will allow the local government to release funds to help restore power and other needs.

The entire island of Siargao and Bucas Grande Islands experienced total power outage for six days now due to a line fault in the submarine cable between Barangay Cagdianao in Claver and Barangay Doña Helen in Socorro.

In an emergency council meeting on Thursday, the general manager of Siargao Electric Cooperative Inc. (SIARELCO) reportedly said that the contractor already obtained the materials needed to repair the submarine cable.

Power is expected to be restored on Sunday, December 8.

A four-megawatt generator set is also set to arrive on Friday, December 6, which would supply power to four towns for six hours on a rotational basis. GMA Regional TV
