PHIVOLCS monitor Kanlaon ash emissions, volcanic earthquakes

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has reported that volcanic earthquakes and ash emissions were observed from the summit crater of Kanlaon Volcano on Friday.

The agency reported that at least 13 volcanic earthquakes occurred and up to 4,246 tonnes of Sulfur Dioxide flux (on Nov. 14, 2024).

There was also 1,000 meters tall voluminous, continuous degassing with occasional ash emission in a northwest drift.

The volcano edifice, PHIVOLCS noted, is inflated.

"Alert Level 2 prevails over Kanlaon Volcano," PHIVOLCS said.

PHIVOLCS also posted a time-lapse footage showing ash emissions from the Kanlaon Volcano summit crater that was observed between 8:45 a.m. and 10:02 a.m. on Friday.

"These events generated grayish plumes that rose 350 meters above the crater before drifting west as recorded by the Kanlaon Volcano Observatory - Canlaon City IP cameras." the agency also said.

The agency issued a reminder that entry into 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) and flying any aircraft close to the volcano is prohibited.

The public is also warned that possible hazards that can occur, such as sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions and precursory magmatic activity. — BAP, GMA Integrated News
