PHIVOLCS: 6 quakes recorded at Kanlaon Volcano
Six volcanic earthquakes were monitored at Kanlaon Volcano, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said Tuesday.
According to PHIVOLCS, the volcano, which is located in Negros Island, also emitted a “moderate” 200-meter tall plumes that drifted southeast. Its edifice also remained inflated.
On Sunday, October 20, Kanlaon Volcano released 6,477 tonnes of sulfur dioxide flux.
Volcanic ash were earlier spotted being intermittently “entrained” or spewed out following continuous degassing from Kanlaon Volcano's summit crater, said PHIVOLCS.
Alert Level 2 (increasing unrest) currently prevails over Kanlaon Volcano, but PHIVOLCS warned that its activity may lead to eruptive unrest and an increase in the alert level.
Entry into the volcano’s 4-kilometer radius permanent danger zone, and flying any aircraft close to it are prohibited. Sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions may also occur.
Mayon Volcano
Meanwhile, two rockfall events were recorded at Mayon Volcano in Albay province.
It also generated a total of 1,064 tonnes of sulfur dioxide flux on Monday, October 21.
Mayon Volcano, which is currently under Alert Level 1 due to low-level unrest, also had a “moderate” emission of plumes that drifted west-southwest.
A short term inflation was also observed on its edifice.
Entry into the six-kilometer radius permanent danger zone of Mayon Volcano is not allowed, as well as flying any aircraft close to it.
Hazards such as sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions, rockfalls, landslides or avalanches, as well as lahars during heavy and prolonged rainfall may also occur in the area. — Giselle Ombay/RSJ, GMA Integrated News
