Mount Kanlaon in Negros Island emitted at least 5,000 tonnes of sulfur dioxide on Thursday evening, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

State seismologists shared a video taken at 8:30 p.m. that showed the continuous degassing from the summit crater of Kanlaon Volcano that was recorded by a thermal camera of the Lower Masulog, Canlaon City Observation Station (VKLM).

“Sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission measured today averaged 5,150 tonnes/day,” PHIVOLCS reported.

According to the agency, “the volcano has been continuously degassing elevated concentrations of SO2 since its 3 June 2024 eruption at an average of 4,185 tonnes/day.”
