Over P4M worth of giant clams confiscated in Carles, Iloilo
Seventy sacks or more than two tons of giant clams or taklobo were seized in Gigantes Island in Carles, Iloilo.
According to a GMA Regional TV report aired on “Balitanghali” on Wednesday, the confiscated giant clams have an estimated value of over P4 million.
The Iloilo maritime police said the suspect was not able to show a document after being caught selling the giant clams, the report said.
The suspect will face charges for violating the Philippine Fisheries Code.
Republic Act 10654, or the Amended Philippine Fisheries Code, penalizes fishing or taking of rare, threatened, or endangered species with imprisonment of 12 years and one day to 20 years and a fine equivalent to twice the administrative fine, forfeiture of the species, and the cancellation of a fishing permit.
