Taal Volcano had 4 phreatic eruptions —PHIVOLCS

Taal Volcano in Batangas had four phreatic eruptions on Friday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.

The phreatic eruptions lasting from one minute to six minutes long were observed from 12 a.m. Friday to 12 a.m. Saturday, the agency said in its bulletin.

A phreatic eruption is a steam-driven explosion that happens when magma heats the ground or surface water according to the United State Geological Survey.

Two volcanic earthquakes including one volcanic tremor lasting seven minutes long also occurred on Friday.

On October 3, a total of 3,276 tons of sulfur dioxide were emitted by Taal Volcano. PHIVOLCS also observed that time an upwelling of hot volcanic fluids in the Main Crater Lake.

Voluminous plumes rising up to 1,200 meters tall were also observed on Friday, and these drifted in the southwest direction.

PHIVOLCS said the volcano has long-term deflation in its caldera.

Meanwhile, short-term inflation of the general northern and southeastern flanks of Taal Volcano Island was observed.

Alert Level 1 (Low-level unrest) remains in effect at Taal Volcano on Saturday, PHIVOLCS said.

The public was warned that steam-driven or phreatic or gas-driven explosions may occur, as well as volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall, and lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas.

PHIVOLCS reiterated that Taal Volcano Island, considered a permanent danger zone, is off limits, especially the Main Crater and Daang Kastilla fissures.

Likewise, occupancy and boating on Taal Lake and flying aircraft close to Taal Volcano is prohibited. —KG, GMA Integrated News
