Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas won't seek re-election, endorses daughter as replacement

Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas on Thursday announced that he will not seek re-election in the 2025 midterm elections, instead endorsing his daughter Raisa Treñas-Chua for the mayoralty race.

“It has been my greatest honor to serve as your City Mayor. While it has been my intention to finish my term, I believe it is in the best interest of Team Uswag and the city for me to stand down and to focus on fulfilling my duties as City Mayor for the remainder of my term,” he said in a statement shared on his official Facebook page.

He said that he is still recovering from his bile duct operation, also asking the public to include him in their prayers.

Treñas first served the city from 2001 to 2010, returning to office in 2019.

The incumbent mayor initially endorsed his daughter, who is also serving as his executive assistant, to run for Iloilo City’s lone congressional seat in the upcoming polls next year.

But with his latest pronouncement, Treñas said that he is also supporting the re-election bid of incumbent Iloilo City lone district Rep. Julienne Baronda.

“In the spirit of unity, we are joining forces with Cong. Jam Baronda as Representative of the Lone District, and my daughter Raisa for Mayor,” he said.  —Vince Angelo Ferreras/RF, GMA Integrated News
