Kanlaon had 25 volcanic quakes, increased sulfur dioxide flux -PHIVOLCS
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on Saturday said Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island had 25 volcanic earthquakes and an increased volume of sulfur dioxide flux in the past 24 hours.
A total of 10,228 tonnes of sulfur dioxide were emitted on Friday, PHIVOLCS said.
Voluminous plumes rose from the crater up to 300 meters before drifting northeast and east-northeast.
The volcano edifice remains inflated.
PHIVOLCS said Kanlaon Volcano is still under Alert Level 2, meaning it is still in a state of increased unrest.
It reiterated that entry into the four-kilometer radius permanent danger zone is prohibited, and so is flying aircraft close to the volcano.
Sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions may occur, PHIVOLCS said.
On June 3, Kanlaon Volcano erupted, emitting 5,000-meter tall plumes. —KG, GMA Integrated News
