Kanlaon Volcano logs 32 earthquakes
Thirty-two volcanic earthquakes were recorded at Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island since Monday midnight, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on Tuesday.
PHIVOLCS also said the plumes at the volcano were “obscured,” while its edifice remained inflated.
On September 12, Kanlaon Volcano generated sulfur dioxide flux amounting to 10,880 tonnes.
Last week, state volcanologists noted increased seismic activity at Kanlaon Volcano, just three months after it erupted in June.
PHIVOLCS said that Alert Level 2 or a state of increasing unrest prevails over Kanlaon, “but that current seismic activity may lead to eruptive unrest and an increase in the Alert Level.”
Currently, entry into the volcano’s 4-kilometer radius permanent danger zone, and flying any aircraft close to it are still prohibited.
Sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions may also occur, PHIVOLCS said. —Giselle Ombay/KG, GMA Integrated News
